How long will a 1000Wh power station run a fridge?

Updated October 15, 2026

Short answer: about 17 hours for a 12V camping fridge that averages 50W, and roughly 4 to 8 hours for a kitchen fridge, depending on how hard it’s working.

Here’s how we get there. You can draw about 850Wh from a 1,000Wh station once inverter losses are taken off. Divide that by your fridge’s average draw and you’ve got hours. A fridge that averages 100W gets about 8 hours; one that averages 200W gets about 4.

Why your fridge’s average matters more than its label

A fridge doesn’t run flat out all hour. The compressor kicks on, cools things down, then rests. So the number you want is the average over a few hours, which is usually well below the watts on the label.

If you’ve got a plug-in energy meter, run your fridge through it for a day and divide the kWh by 24. That’s your real average, and it beats any rule of thumb.

What shortens it

A hot kitchen, a full freezer section that’s been opened a lot, and a door that’s opened every half hour all push the average up. Keep the door shut during an outage and you’ll get noticeably more hours.

The other thing to watch is start-up. A compressor can pull several times its running watts for a moment, so the station’s continuous and surge ratings need to cover that, even when the watt-hours look fine. Every 1kWh station below is rated 1,500W or more continuous, which is plenty for a typical kitchen fridge.

Common questions

Will a 1000Wh power station run a fridge overnight?
A 12V fridge, yes, comfortably. At a 50W average you’d get about 17 hours. A kitchen fridge averaging 100W gets about 8 hours, which covers most of a night if you keep the door shut.
How do I work it out for my own fridge?
Take the station’s watt-hours, multiply by 0.85, then divide by your fridge’s average watts. For a 1,024Wh station and a 70W fridge, that’s 1,024 × 0.85 ÷ 70, or about 12 hours.
